He was born on October 25, 1945 in Warsaw. In 1970 he graduated from the Faculty of Law at the University of Warsaw. He completed judicial and advocate training; since 1973 he has been practicing as a lawyer, a lawyer in criminal matters, in the field of family law and the defense of personal rights. During the martial law period, he appeared in the trials of Solidarity activists (including Huta Warszawa, Ursus, the National Commission and Radio "Solidarność"); he was an auxiliary prosecutor in the trial of the assassins of Fr. Jerzy Popiełuszko and a lawyer in the case of Colonel Ryszard Kuklinski. Long-term member of the Bar Council in Warsaw, lecturer and member of the examination board for trainee lawyers, vice-chairman of the Human Rights Commission at the Supreme Bar Council; expert in the "Solidarity" Mazovia Region and the Bar Association (legislative). Co-founder and vice-chairman of the "Patronage" Association of Prisoner Care (dissolved after the imposition of martial law).

He is the co-author of film scripts for 17 films by Krzysztof Kieślowski, including Endless, Decalogue, Veronica's Double Life, Three Colors ; these screenplays have been awarded many times, including the Felix European film award (1989), at festivals in Cannes, San Sebastian, Venice, Berlin, Gdansk, and the screenplay for the film Three Colors - Red received an Oscar nomination. The screenplays were translated into 10 languages ​​and published in book form (Decalogue, 1989).

A member of many institutions and organizations dealing with culture, including the American Film Academy, the Media Ethics Council, the Program Council of Telewizja Polska SA, and the Program Council of Studium Generale Europa at University of Stefan Wyszyński in Warsaw; he is a columnist for many weekly and monthly magazines.

active since the beginning of the 90s participant in political life; a member of the Supreme Political Council of the Center Agreement and served on this party on the Senate of the second term (1991-1993); he was then the vice-chairman of the Senate Committee on Culture, Media, Science and National Education. He was re-elected to the Senate in 1997 (deputy chairman of the Human Rights and the Rule of Law Committee) and in 2001 (chairman of the Senate Club "Blok Senat 2000").

In the parliamentary elections in 2005 he ran for the Senate of the Republic of Poland from the Civic Platform's Warsaw list obtaining a senatorial mandate.
